Year 8 pupils made a trip to our local Asda superstore to conduct a Fairtrade price investigation. Pupils looked at prices of non-Fairtrade products and Fairtrade products. At school, we then compared prices and talked about how recognising healthy lifestyles, and the wellbeing of self and others, depend on information and making responsible choices. This visit was in relation to our ‘You and global issues – food and water’ topic which aims to help pupils explore concerns about how our foods are produced, and to debate arguments for and against genetically modified food. Fairtrade was introduced as an extension topic within this subject area in order to help pupils understand that contributing to local and global communities is important and to further help pupils learn about the principles governing Fairtrade and how to use them in our ordinary lives.
